School of Foreign Languages
The School of Foreign Languages of Xichang University dates back to over 30 years ago under the name of Foreign Languages Department of Xichang Teachers College set up in 1986.
The school currently offers three undergraduate programs, namely, English, English Translation, and Business English, as well as junior college programs in English Education and Business English. Continuing undergraduate education is additionally afforded for adults. At present there are 1270 full-time students from 19 provinces and over 9,800 full-time students have successfully graduated from the School of Foreign Languages.
Among the current staff of 60 members, three are professors, 18 associate professors and one academic foregoers; one doctoral degrees； 38 of them hold master; and 3 of them are going to obtain doctoral degrees. More than ten faculties have furthered their study as visiting scholars in the U.S., Britain, Australia and, New Zealand, Korea, and Japan. The past years has witnessed faculties’ significant achievements in research, bringing to fruition over 50 projects with provincial and college funds, more than 20 textbooks or monographs, about 500 published papers, two college-level excellent courses, and over 30 provincial or college awards on research achievements.
The School of Foreign Languages is equipped with multimedia labs and online language learning platform for language study, simultaneous interpretation, international business practice, and online self-learning. Meanwhile, two FM broadcasting stations are available for English instruction.
The School of Foreign Languages is broadening its connections and academic exchanges with universities and institutions home and abroad to push its education to a forward position. Cooperated with Eastern New Mexico University, Swansea University and China Service Center for International Friendship and Cooperation, the school has offered students such programs as Sino-US 2+2 Dual Degree Program, Sino-UK Pre-Master Program, and Work & Travel Program in the United States.
The school actively pioneers the personnel training mode of “BA degree + Vocational Skills”, bringing into full play of the cooperative instruction mechanism closely involving government, enterprises and educational institutions. It highlights students’ practical abilities and vocational skills, aiming at educating application-oriented and versatile EFL talents rooted in quality-oriented education, innovation education and interdisciplinary education. Serving as a support, strategic cooperation agreements for students’ serving the community and the society has been signed up with local Youth League Committee, Tourist Administration and Foreign Affairs Office. In addition, over ten off-campus internship bases for collaborative training and education have been set up in Wuxi, Chongqing, Chengdu, Panzhihua and in Xichang. Thus decisive progress in educating competent students has been made in recent years. Such testimonials were respective appraisals won by students in the CCTV Cup English Speech Contest (Sichuan Part), UChallenge English Contests (Sichuan Part), Cross-Strait Interpreting Contest, National Spoken English Contest and National English Writing Contest for College Students. Moreover, some students have won the national project approval of Student"s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program and college project approval of extracurricular scientific research with extra credits awarded. Since 2007, more than 90 students have been admitted into well-known universities such as Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Sichuan International Studies University, Sichuan University, University of Electronic Science and Technology, Southwest University, Southwestern University of Finance and Economics and Wuhan University to have their postgraduate studies.
The School of Foreign Languages has been completing the working mechanism to broaden the employment channels for students after graduation. Therefore the graduates’ employment rate has been kept over 92% high in recent years while it has also witnessed a steady upgrading of the kinds of jobs they are holding. Graduates from the School of Foreign Languages have been rendering the society greater services home and abroad, and are forging new milestones.
